Cattrall and the City
An awful lot of commentary from someone who wants to distance herself from “Sex and The City”.
Did you ever work along side a co-worker who hates their job so much that it is all they talk about? Or, when you occasionally meet that former co-worker for lunch (who finally did quit) and all they talk about is how happy they are not to be working at their old job? It is truly maddening and makes the person, not their former job, look worse then the conditions they constantly complain about. Actress Kim Cattrall is a lot like that person.
The defining role in Cattrall’s career is no doubt the solatiouse Samantha Jones of “Sex and the City”. But yet, Cattrall has spent the last number of years defending her position as to the reasons she did not return to the franchise that made her famous? Also adding commentary on how many times she wasn’t asked to return even though she would never want to? Sounds like a former girlfriend/boyfriend who broke up with the love of their life but displays all the behavior of someone who regrets the decision as soon as they made it. Instead of admitting they are better together than apart the jiltee bad mouths and ridicules anything and everything about their former flame to anyone who will listen.
Listen, do I think the relationship between Cattrall and Sarah Jessica Parker was perfect? No. Afterall, Cattrall started out as the main draw for the series and Parker became the cornerstone over time. Egos in the entertainment business can take on more room in any project then the budget that is supporting it. Male, Female, it doesn’t matter. However, it is very telling that the other actresses; Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis have remained largely neutral in this toxic war between Cattrall and Parker. Nor, to their credit, have either actresses (Cattrall or Parker) dragged either Nixon or Davis into their dog fight by forcing them to choose sides.
The latest comments that Cattrall didn’t want to talk about was on May 4th where Cattrall “opens up” about why she did not participate in the “And Just Like that” reboot;
In an interview with Variety published on Wednesday, May 4, Cattrall recalled what it was like for her to leave the franchise in 2017 after she played the witty sex-positive character in the HBO series from 1998 to 2004 and its subsequent films in 2008 and 2010.
“It’s a great wisdom to know when enough is enough,” Cattrall said.
Although the show made her a household name, Cattrall said that she was “done” with the franchise after she appeared in the second movie. When she was asked to do a third “Sex and the City” film, Cattrall made it clear;
that she was never going to play Jones again.
She noted that she didn’t want to “compromise what the show was to” her and she also wanted to take on different roles as a “character actress.”
“Can you imagine going back to a job you did 25 years ago? And the job didn’t get easier; it got more complicated in the sense of how are you going to progress with these characters?” she asked. “Everything has to grow, or it dies. I felt that when the series ended, I thought that’s smart. We’re not repeating ourselves.”
But when she was asked to do three movies on top of that, Cattrall knew that it was too much. She agreed to do the first film because it was supposed to tie up all the “loose ends” in the television series, but when she read the script for the third film, Cattrall decided to immediately bow out.
The third film was supposed to profile Big’s death, as well as a storyline about Miranda’s son sending her character unwanted pictures of his body.
“I would have preferred for all of us to have some kind of event to warrant a third film,” she said. “That didn’t happen.”
Big’s death was ultimately tackled in the “Sex and the City” reboot, “And Just Like That…,” which premiered on HBO Max in December 2021.
Cattrall, who wasn’t a part of the revival, said she found out about it on social media;
“like everyone else.” She added, “The series is basically the third movie. That’s how creative it was.”
Cattrall and her former co-star Sarah Jessica Parker haven’t been on the best of terms due to their long-running feud in the media. Things got so bad that Parker told Variety in February 2022 that she wouldn’t want Cattrall to reprise her role as Jones.
And just like that…..
Cattrall continues to talk about the reasons she didn’t think that it was “creatively” wise to keep going with Samantha Jones and how she was not asked to take part even though she stated firmly about opposing her reprise?
Parker and Michael Patrick King took the high-road on the character of Samantha Jones in the Reboot by not killing her off and managing to make Samantha Jones still part of the show thorough text messages. Even making Cattrall’s character likeable even though the feud between Parker and Cattrall is beyond repair. It is finally time for Kim Cattrall to make peace with her decision and truly stop talking about it. Just like that…
